Hung Gar Kung Fu in Reading
Traditional southern Chinese kung fu taught by Sifu Wayne Husbands at the Reading School of Martial Arts — classes for adults, children, and women in Reading, Berkshire.
What Is Hung Gar Kung Fu?
Hung Gar (洪家) is one of the most respected southern Chinese martial arts, rooted in the Shaolin tradition and passed down through the Lau family lineage over centuries. It is characterised by powerful, rooted stances, hard striking techniques, and a deep emphasis on physical conditioning and mental discipline.
At the Reading School of Martial Arts, Sifu Wayne Husbands teaches authentic Lau family Hung Gar Kung Fu — the same lineage that runs from the Shaolin Temple through Wong Fei Hung, Lam Sai Wing, Lau Jaam, and Lau Kar Leung. This is not a watered-down sport style. It is a complete martial system built for real-world effectiveness and lifelong personal development.
The style is particularly well suited to students in Reading who want genuine traditional training rather than modern sport-focused classes. You will learn striking, grappling, weapon forms, and the philosophical foundations that make Hung Gar a complete martial art.
Why Train Hung Gar in Reading?
Sifu Wayne trained under Master Mark Houghton, who trained under Lau Kar Leung — one of the most celebrated Hung Gar masters of the 20th century.
You learn the full system — hand techniques, forms, weapons, partner work, and chi gong — not a selection of techniques stripped of context.
Sifu Wayne has over three decades of training across Hong Kong, China, the USA, Greece, and Britain.
Personal attention from Sifu Wayne rather than being lost in a large group. Progression is tracked and structured.
Whether you are a complete beginner or have previous martial arts experience, training is structured to your level.
Classes held at Saint Bart's Church, London Road, Reading, RG1 3QA — easy to reach from across Berkshire.
