Pau Choy — Upward Cannon Fist

An explosive rising strike from a coiled position — the embodiment of Hung Gar's hard principle.

What Is Pau Choy?

Pau ChoyUpward Cannon Fist — is seen in Gung Ji Fook Fu Kuen and Fu Hok Seung Ying Kuen. It rises from a coiled position and explodes upward.

Shape

Vertical or diagonal rising strike.

Motion

From a coiled position — swings upward with force.

Tool

First two knuckles (vertical fist), or the forearm in close quarters.

How to Execute

  1. Chamber the fist low at the waist or hip, palm facing inward.
  2. Sink the stance and coil the waist.
  3. Explosively uncoil — push from the legs upward, driving waist rotation.
  4. Drive the fist upward in a tight arc toward the chin, jaw, or solar plexus.
  5. Follow through with forward energy — explode into the opponent.

Applications

Chin/jaw strike

Uppercut-style — rises under the guard at close range.

Lifting the guard

Knocks the opponent's hands upward, opening their centreline.

Body shock

Targets the diaphragm or solar plexus from underneath.

Counter to downward pressure

Jams upward when an opponent grabs or presses low.
