A short, compact downward knuckle strike — effective in close-range defence against grabs and holds.

What Is Kup Choy?

Kup Choy is a compact downward knuckle strike used in Hung Gar, Wing Chun, and the Tiger and Crane system. Short motion, focused force, close range.

Key Characteristics

Downward motion

Delivered downward — targeting the head, shoulders, or chest.

Knuckle alignment

First two knuckles for focused power.

Compact movement

Short wrist and forearm motion — no large wind-up.

Close range

Most effective at trapping or grappling distance.

How to Execute

  1. Chamber: Raise the striking hand near the ear or shoulder.
  2. Downward strike: Extend the hand downward with the elbow slightly bent.
  3. Impact: Drive the first two knuckles with a sharp, focused impact.

Develops striking power and knuckle conditioning.

Pad work

Improves accuracy and distance management.

Partner work

Builds adaptability in live situations.

Application

Effective against grabs and holds at close range.
