White Tiger Fist · Hung Gar Kung Fu

Ping Choy — Level Fist

A straight punch executed with a horizontally oriented fist — the knuckles aligned flat with the palm facing down.

What Is Ping Choy?

Ping Choy translates to Level Fist or Flat Fist. It is a powerful, direct strike that embodies the strong, rooted characteristics of Hung Gar — driving from the ground up through legs, hips, waist, and fist in a single unified movement.

How to Execute

  1. Stance and Rooting — Begin in sei ping ma (horse stance) or gung ji ma (bow and arrow stance). The punch is driven from the legs and hips, not the arm alone.
  2. Fist Position — The fist travels in a straight line. The palm faces down, knuckles flat and horizontal — hence the name ping (flat/level).
  3. Arm Mechanics — Keep the elbow slightly bent at extension. The non-punching hand chambers at the hip to generate torque.
  4. Power Generation — Power comes from waist rotation, stance, and intent. The whole body delivers the strike.

Key Points

Rooted base

A low, stable stance is non-negotiable. Unstable legs produce an unstable punch.

Horizontal knuckles

The palm-down orientation defines Ping Choy and differentiates it from a vertical-fist punch.

Hip drive

Rotation from the waist multiplies force. The shoulder follows the hip.

Chamber opposite hand

Withdrawing the non-striking hand to the hip creates counter-force and balance.
