Zhang / Zhou — Elbow Strikes

Five types of elbow strike — vertical, horizontal, downward, rear, and spinning. Devastating at close range.

Overview

Zhang / Zhou elbow strikes use the point or edge of the elbow to deliver powerful, short-range blows — effective inside fist-striking distance.

Five Types

Vertical Elbow (Upward Zhang)

Upward driving motion — under the chin or into the ribs.

Horizontal Elbow (Side Zhang)

Tight horizontal swing — aimed at the temple, jaw, or ribs.

Drop Elbow (Down Zhang)

Smashes downward onto the collarbone, shoulder, or face.

Rear Elbow (Back Zhang)

Thrust backward — useful when the opponent is behind you.

Spinning Elbow (Whirl Zhang)

During a turn or spin — gaining momentum to strike from the side or behind.

Close-range power

Most effective inside fist-striking distance.

Application Tips

  • Range: Most effective at clinching or grappling distance.
  • Targets: Chin, jaw, temple, nose, solar plexus, ribs, neck, collarbone.
  • Body mechanics: Hip rotation, torso torque, and step-in motion generate power.
  • Combination: Parry → palm strike → elbow → knee → throw.
